Yet Another Liberal Flip Flop – Tenth Time Is The Charm On Anti-Scab Legislation
Bill C-257, which gave me waking nightmares, appears to be more than just a private member’s bill designed to cripple the Canadian economy. It is another example of Liberal’s flip flopping and another example of just how far left Stephane Dion really is.
He has moved so far left that centrists don’t even recognize him. But why?
First of all we have the Conservatives showing they are truly a modern party and not the extremist, right wing, scary Party the Liberals have painted them to be for a decade. This has given the Tories growth towards the Liberal center.
Then we have the NDP, who showed a bit of strength when they held up Martin’s minority government the way an emphysema sufferer is held up by a green oxygen tank outside the hospital doors. Lend Jack your vote and he would chomp a bit of the left leaning Liberals over to the NDP.
So Dion steps in stuck between a Rock and a somewhat hard place. Where is he going to get his votes? Does he fight the right in a battle of wits with a seasoned warrior like Harper who is pummeling him in Question Period day after day after day? Or does he look for the low hanging fruit, and try to steal back the NDP voters who do not want Harper in government no matter what?
My guess is the latter.
This is why the Liberals have flip-flopped again and chosen to support anti-scab legislation.
At first, few took the bill seriously.
The handiwork of Bloc Quebecois MP Richard Nadeau, the proposed legislation was introduced as a so-called private-member’s bill, one of dozens of draft laws floated by backbench MPs that go nowhere, quietly dying on the Commons order paper.
Nadeau’s bill was also the tenth attempt by an opposition MP to introduce anti-scab legislation in recent years, all of which failed to materialize under previous Liberal governments.
But a funny thing happened on the Grits’ way to the opposition benches.
When the bill came to preliminary votes in the Commons, it was suddenly backed by the Liberals, along with the Bloc, New Democrats and even a few Conservative MPs from Quebec (who have since recanted) — more than enough to pass through the minority parliament.
I guess the TENTH time is the charm.
So after nine failed attempts at having anti-scab legislation go through the house under the Liberals watch (with support from the Tories to stop it each time), Dion has chosen to forsake the Canadian economy, the way he would by shutting down industry to meet Kyoto, and support the tenth attempt at getting anti-scab legislation through.
Stop Bill C-267. Write your MP. If he/she is a Liberal, write him/her and get a few friends to do the same. This legislation is just plain wrong and a Liberal flip flop on this needs to be addressed.
CBC Has Dirty, Filthy, Nicotine-Stained Secret
This morning on the radio, I heard a short clip about a dirty little secret the CBC has. Or more accurately, two dirty little secrets.
There are apparently video and/or photos taken with a hidden camera of two smoking lounges located in the CBC’s Toronto facilities. Smoking lounges with nice, comfy sofas and ashtrays packed with cigarette butts.
It’s nice to know that private corporations in Ontario are legally mandated to be smoke free but the precious CBC can have not one, but TWO smoking rooms.
I have yet to see this in print, but as soon as I do, I will add to this blog post. You can read about this in the National Post.

(Note: I am not against smoking, as I, myself, smoked for over 18 years. I just think what’s good for the goose is good for the gander. Keep your eyes open for a public announcement that these smoking rooms have been officially closed.)
Al Gore Wins Booby Prize (Right After Winning Oscar)
Not 24 hours after Al Gore’s movie won an Oscar, he gets awarded the big booby prize. The hypocrisy that this man shows is on the grandest scale.
Last night (Feb. 25, 2007), Al Gore’s global-warming documentary, An Inconvenient Truth, collected an Oscar for best documentary feature, but the Tennessee Center for Policy Research has found that Gore deserves a gold statue for hypocrisy.
Gore’s mansion, [20-room, eight-bathroom] located in the posh Belle Meade area of Nashville, consumes more electricity every month than the average American household uses in an entire year, according to the Nashville Electric Service (NES).
In his documentary, the former Vice President calls on Americans to conserve energy by reducing electricity consumption at home.
The average household in America consumes 10,656 kilowatt-hours (kWh) per year, according to the Department of Energy. In 2006, Gore devoured nearly 221,000 kWh—more than 20 times the national average.
Last August alone, Gore burned through 22,619 kWh—guzzling more than twice the electricity in one month than an average American family uses in an entire year. As a result of his energy consumption, Gore’s average monthly electric bill topped $1,359.
Since the release of An Inconvenient Truth, Gore’s energy consumption has increased from an average of 16,200 kWh per month in 2005, to 18,400 kWh per month in 2006.
Gore’s extravagant energy use does not stop at his electric bill. Natural gas bills for Gore’s mansion and guest house averaged $1,080 per month last year.
“As the spokesman of choice for the global warming movement, Al Gore has to be willing to walk to walk, not just talk the talk, when it comes to home energy use,” said Tennessee Center for Policy Research President Drew Johnson.
In total, Gore paid nearly $30,000 in combined electricity and natural gas bills for his Nashville estate in 2006.

I Had A Waking Nightmare…
…that I went to the hospital but the nurses were on strike … and the NDP anti-scab legislation wouldn’t let the hospital hire people to fill in.
…that I walked my kids to school through a foot high pile of trash, fighting off the seagulls, and hoisting my daughter on my shoulders so the rats wouldn’t bite her ankles … because the NDP anti-scab legislation means when the city garbage men went on strike we couldn’t hire replacements.
… that a blogburst to stop the NDP anti-scab legislation didn’t work.
When a man or woman belong to a union, they have a right to strike. They have a right to step up and say to the man “I don’t want what you’re giving.”
But on that token, I would never, ever, ever want to tell someone who runs a company or organization that they can not ensure they operate by hiring whomever they want.
And I would never, ever, ever want to tell someone who has been out of work that if an opportunity came along for them to find a half decent job to help pay the bills or put food on the table for their family that they can’t take that job because of Jack Layton’s anti-scab proposed legislation.
Just Say No To Bill C-257. Call your MP to let them know what you think about this bill that takes the freedom to work away from people who want a job.

Suzuki Paying For Salvation – Gets Stranded In Purgatory
As I mentioned on February 5th, David Suzuki will be buying his way out of environmental Hell.
The foundation estimates the bus alone might produce about 20 tonnes of CO2. It is paying up to $35 per tonne to offset these emissions.
Whoop – Deee – Dooo.
They are compensating for the CO2 emissions to the tune of $23 a day. But in the meantime, their diesel bus will have driven over 3000 km spewing NOx, CO (carbon MONOXIDE, the POISONOUS gas), and particulate matter (soot). But that’s ok. They could have found a biodiesel bus. They could have found an hydrogen fuel cell bus. They could have gone by train.
Nope. Not good enough for Suzuki. Only a Rock Star style tour bus would do. So when our current government is working on removing chemicals and particulates from the air and fighting smog, the environmentalists continue to fight against the gas that gives plants life. I guess eating veggies is déclassé.
POI – On the last three trips I have made to Toronto, I have ended up with a sore throat which cleared a couple of days after I returned to Ottawa. My guess is that it was not me being sick, but that it was the chemicals in Toronto’s air. I have another trip scheduled to visit the big smoke and I will let you know whether the smog is the culprit.
In the mean time, I will let Suzuki keep OfficiallyScrewing the environment by buying carbon credits from some company in Switzerland.
Australia Moves To Fluorescents
Little girls across Australia are crying because they will no longer be able to cook those tasty tiny cakes in their EZ Bake ovens.
In an effort to reduce GHGs the government has decided to phase out incandescent bulbs over the next three years.
Federal Environment Minister Malcolm Turnbull this morning announced standard incandescent light bulbs would be phased out within three years in a bid to reduce energy consumption.
“We are introducing new energy efficiency standards and these old lights simply won’t comply, they will be phased out and basically over a period of time they will no longer be for sale,” Mr Turnbull said.
Compact fluorescent or low-wattage bulbs cost about $5 more, but are more energy-efficient and save an average of $30 per year.
“They’ll be a bit dearer to start off with but over time they’ll be less expensive and they’ll last four to 10 times longer,” said Mr Howard.
This type of plan makes sense to me because the ban will be on selling the bulbs, as opposed to using them, as there will always be a few who want to use up their old bulbs even though the math works out that you are better off financially if you switch over right away.
But to me the big reason a move like this is good is because it drives volume way up on a product and when that happens, economies of scale kick in. This means that as more nations move towards a 100% fluorescent market, the cost of the bulbs will drop which will make it easier for households with tighter budgets to take part. When I went to switch most of my bulbs over three or four years ago, the cost of the fluorescents was not $5 more but 5 times more.
Technically, this move will produce a bit less heat in the winters which will put more strain on furnaces, but there is a doubly good benefit in the summers when the Air Conditioners will need to operate a bit less to cool off the added heat and the power savings of these bulbs will reduce the strain on power grids that tend to hit capacity on the hottest days due to Air Conditioner usage. It may seem paltry at a one home level, but when you look at 5 million homes or 10 million homes, this idea has it’s merits.
Human Rights Groups Now Responsible For Commiting Human Wrongs
I would love to start a group to sue the Human Rights groups for abusing people with frivolous legal action. We could call it a Human Wrongs group.
Canada’s practice of turning detainees over to Afghan security forces, widely accused of torture and abuse, violates international law and the Charter of Rights, Amnesty International and the British Columbia Civil Liberties Association say.
The two groups will Wednesday file an application in Federal Court in Ottawa seeking judicial review of the military’s controversial policy. Named as respondents in the action are Defence Minister Gordon O’Connor, General Rick Hillier, Canada’s Chief of the Defence Staff, and Attorney-General Robert Nicholson.
The legal action will be announced today by Alex Neve, Amnesty International Canada’s Secretary-General, and Shirley Heafey, a B.C. Civil Liberties Association board member.
What these groups don’t realize is that we are not at war with Afghanistan. We are there now in rebuilding/reconstructive role. This means we work WITH their police forces and not against them.
If there are issues with the Afghani police forces, that is a concern and should be addressed via the appropriate Internal Affairs (or similar equivalent) department within their police.
Sometimes Life Just Smiles On You…
… and those are the days you feel light in your step and walk around whistling and making everyone at work despise you for being in a good mood.
Sunday I was out all day as my daughter was competing in a local invitational tournament I was emcee-ing. Now for those who remember, Cookie finished 17th of 17 at provincials two years ago. And last year she moved up to 7th out of 13 in her age group.
Well at this local invitational, there were 8 ladies in her age group which is about half the total competition for the provincials in a couple of months. Cookie ended up taking a bronze in her free routine, a 5th place in her ball routine and she nailed her ribbon routine for the gold, taking a silver overall and another silver with her duo partner.
This all bodes well for a great showing at this years provincials.
Then I come home Monday night and hear that Charles Adler is not going to sue me for using his voice in a Smackdown!! (phew!!) In fact, I hear he gave me some compliments on the air which I am ecstatic and very appreciative of. Mr. Adler is a well known and well respected sanity check expert calling people out on all types of issues where a sanity check is needed. I took the liberty of cropping the compliments he gave me and turning them into an MP3 you can listen to below.

At a time when the opposition is supposed to be holding the government accountable, this Liberal leader is, quite frankly, taking it on his glass chin.
