Liberal Leader Michael Zsohar's Circle Includes Supporters Of International Drug Traffickers

Yup. You heard right.

On Sunday’s Question Period in an interview with Craig Oliver, Michael Zsohar claimed the Prime Minister’s judgment was in question for how he handled the situation surrounding Rahim Jaffer’s original arrest for drunk driving and cocaine posession. He asked if the PM called Ms Guergis in to ask her what was going on? How could this have happened? As if it was the Prime Minister’s fault.

From the Turnaround Is Fair Play department, how does Michael Zsohar sleep at night knowing one of his MP’s has written letters in support of an international drug trafficker?

How bad is his judgment that Michael Zsohar, once acclaimed as leader of the Liberal party, did not boot Sukh Dhaliwal from Caucus when the MP for Newton-North Delta claimed an international drug trafficker was rehabilitated?

Surrey Liberal MP Sukh Dhaliwal has written to a U.S. District Court judge on official House of Commons stationery in support of convicted international drug trafficker Ranjit Singh Cheema, The Vancouver Sun has learned.

Cheema was sentenced in California this week to five years in prison after pleading guilty to conspiring to smuggle 200 kilograms of heroin from Pakistan to North America in 1998.

The drugs were supposed to be exchanged with cocaine from a Colombian cartel in a deal that was intercepted by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration.

Dhaliwal’s letter, dated July 9, 2008 and addressed to Judge Stephen V. Wilson, says the Newton-North Delta MP had met Cheema at “community engagements” and that the gangster seemed to be fully rehabilitated after fighting extradition for 10 years.

Michael Zsohar should put his money where his mouth is and reprimand his drug trafficker supporting MP. I mean come on. He wrote a letter supporting a guy who planned to bring 200 kilograms of Heroin into North America. 200 Kilograms!! For real?? Yes For real.

Michael Zsohar needs to work on his judgment. And now you know how stretching the truth and making allegations can be turned around on you don’t you Mr. Zsohar.

Cookie Takes The Cake (and the icing)

Well after going 3-0 in day one, and 2-1 in day two, my daughter Cookie and the Ottawa Fusion 14U girls team went into the elimination round with some pretty high expectations on Sunday. The first match had them dumping the Tornadoes in straight sets 25-14 and 25-16. A good start to the day.

Their second match was against the South County Bandits from Essex and the roll continued with a 25-14 and 25-15 straight set victory.

This set up a repeat showdown against the Leaside Lightning. The team that had given the Fusion their only loss of the tourney a day earlier. Leaside is coached by Canadian Olympian and bronze medalist John Child. Leaside is one tough team. The Lightning were flawless in a first set trouncing of the Fusion 25-9. The Fusion were demoralized. The smiles were gone. The heads were hanging. They were in a very dark place.

The second set started out with more of the same and the Leaside Lightning took a commanding 19-7 lead. When up to serve stepped the youngest Fusion player. Barely 13 years old and with nerves of steel, Bekah went on an 11 serve streak to bring the game back to 19-18. Halfway through the streak you could see the spirit returning to the Fusion as if it was being sapped directly from the Lightning. The teams traded a few points but the comeback was well on it’s way and the second set was taken by the Fusion 25-22 in an amazing show of spirit, resilience and determination.

The trend didn’t change much in the third set as the Fusion were rolling at this point. When all was said and done, the tiebreaker went to the Fusion 15-6. In what might be called the comeback of the tournament the Fusion went from being outscored 44-16 to outscoring the Lightning 33-9. The comeback was complete and the Fusion were off to the Gold Medal match against the number 1 seed in Divison 2, the North Bay Blizzard.

Both games in the final were great displays of skill, power and poise, but in the end Cookie and the Fusion won 25-20 and 25-18 to take the Division 2 Gold Medal!!

While waiting for the medal ceremony, the team was chasing down the Ottawa 14U Fusion boys to see how they had done in their bronze medal match (which they won) and we were asked if we wanted another shot with the PM. Clearly the girls gleefully accepted.

The award ceremony had all the parents gleaming but there was one more award to be presented. Each team awards one player with the Award of Excellence which was voted on by the players and coaches. It goes to the player who best displays a combination of traits including spirit, leadership, poise, skill, perserverence, etc. I had a tear in my eye when the coach called Cookie up to receive the award.

There wasn’t a prouder father.

The icing on the cake.

Lighting The Fuse in KW

As pointed out by Jo at Blue Like You, our PM showed up in KW yesterday to watch young Mr. Harper play volleyball with his 14U boys team at the provincials taking place at RIM park. Coincidentally, my daughter Cookie plays for the 14U girls team from the same club. After going 3-0, the girls raced over to watch the boys play and between matches we were all lucky enough to get a team photo with the PM and I managed to sneak another photo with my son.

This being my third or fourth time meeting the Rt. Honourable Stephen Harper, it was actually more fun to watch his son and the other Ottawa boys kick some butt on the court. They have some really talented players who can leap like no tomorrow.

I think what was even more fun was listening to all the 14U girls from teams all over the province whispering “that’s him!” and “wow, I can’t believe he’s here”. Of course they were ALL talking about Ben and not the PM.

Go figure.

Good luck to both OFVC teams. The elimination rounds start tomorrow.

Liberal Leader Michael Zsohar A Sexist

From Wednesday’s Hansard. (emphasis on the bolded portion)

Mr. Michael Ignatieff (Leader of the Opposition, Lib.):

Mr. Speaker, for more than seven months the Prime Minister has stood by and watched while Mr. and Mrs. Jaffer attached their tentacles to the neck of the government and slowly dragged it down. The question now is not about Mr. and Mrs. Jaffer, it is about the Prime Minister.
Will he finally explain why he called in the police? Will he finally admit that in the confidence he placed in this couple, he displayed a poor lack of judgment?

Where are the feminists on this one? Where is Michael Zsohar’s critic for the Status of Women on this one?

Michael Zsohar crossed a line here. Now there is NO turning back.

Ottawa Pays For Citizens To Drink Toilet Water

The City of Ottawa is subsidizing residents $75 to install low flush toilets to save water.

The City of Ottawa also just approved a $1.2 M expenditure on two watermobiles to promote more usage of Ottawa drinking water.

Logic says residents are paying taxes to move water from toilets to drinking glasses.

Yummy! How OfficiallyScrewed is that?

Vimy Day Celebrated – Sir Arthur Currie Would Be Proud

I never found much use in my history lessons as a youth growing up in Toronto. Part of it was the boring curriculum and part of it was my general disinterest. That all changed when I decided to take Ancient History in 11th grade. Mr. Bobb was a funny and engaging teacher and my new found passion for history was kindled in his class room and I began my journey of reading anything I could about ancient civilizations and cultures. But still my thirst for knowledge of Canadian history had not quite been established.

That came years later after I moved from Toronto to Ottawa and sensing stronger national pride here, I picked up Pierre Burton’s two part book on the War of 1812. That really stoked the fires. I read through the Burton two book set quite quickly and wanted more. And there as part of a larger set of historic recounts was his book on Vimy Ridge. I wasn’t sure what Vimy Ridge was yet I was in my late 20’s or early 30’s by this point in time. This was the turning point in my life. This is when I knew I was proud to be Canadian. This was when I felt like a light had been turned on inside me. It was the same pride in hearing the tale of Arthur Curries creeping barrage and the taking of the ridge after so many Brits and Frenchmen had died trying. A day. It took merely a day for Canadians to boot the Germans from their entrenched position and another three to mop up the mess. But the ridge was ours. And it was the first time allied forces had taken a German position and held it.

November 11th is the day veterans around the world remember those who have fought and died for our country. But it was April 9th, 1917 that saw Canada come of age as a nation. Our troops fought as one cohesive unit, alone. Without our British big brothers guiding us. It is for this reason that I would dearly love to see April 9th turned into a day of celebration that should rival the national pride we feel on July 1st.

It is also for this reason that I think of Arthur Currie as one of the most important Canadians in our short history. Today he would be proud of the free nation, whose army he lead to our greatest wartime victory.

Obama Advisor and Ex Fed Chairman Paul Volcker Says VAT Not "Toxic"

President Obama advisor and former federal reserve chairman Paul Volcker starts toying with the national VAT tax. This is similar to our 5% GST and similar to the 20% seen in many European countries.

The U.S. should consider using a European-style value added tax to help bring the deficit down, said White House adviser Paul Volcker in response to a question from CBS MoneyWatch.com at a panel discussion in New York City Tuesday night. “We have to think about really revamping the tax system,” said Volcker, who’s best known for successfully beating down inflation while serving as Ronald Reagan’s Federal Reserve chairman. The VAT, a levy on all the goods and services you consume, is not a “toxic idea,” he added.

Quit Pulling On Tiger's Tail And Just Enjoy His Play

Under the “Who’s Screwed” tab at the top of this page it says:

OfficiallyScrewed.com is a website dedicated to logically degrading, demoralizing, and deflating those that our society chooses to shower with press, praise and perfume (not to mention MONEY) for being imbeciles and officially screwing us, usually politically.

This usually refers to politicians or crazy celebrities, (the octomom being a classic example). But with regards to Tiger Woods it does not apply to the golfer himself, but to the women trying to achieve fame by dragging him down.

I have said this before and I will say this again. If it has to do with his career, his golf swing, his physical condition, his sponsors, his choice in tournaments, his play, his views on other golfers, etc. then it is fair game. If it has to do with his wife or the women in his life, it really is not anyone’s business.

I am proud to say that despite all the news articles out there, I have maintained my lack of disinterest in his personal situation and to this day I cannot name a single women tied to his infidelities, nor do I care to learn their names. I AM excited that he is getting back in the game because I love watching him and cheering him on. He is the best thing that has happened to the game of Golf in decades and I think Golf knows this. (As does the PGA)

You go Tiger.

And Then There Were Two

I love basketball. But I’m not much of a fan of the NBA. I got tired of the travelling violations, lack of real defence, lack of players willing to risk multi million dollar contracts to take a charge. So I gave up on them.
But I HAVE been a big fan of the NCAA men’s finals (or March Madness as it is often nicknamed) since I was old enough to say Never Nervous Purvis or Earl the Pearl and I remember when Leo Rautens and Howard Triche were Syracuse Orangemen far before their sons played for ‘Cuse. I remeber watching David Robinson single handedly destroy my Orangemen when he was with Navy. I remember Jim Valvano’s NC State and Rollie Massamino’s Villanova winning the tourney as underdogs.
And I am incredibly proud of the fact that I can pronounce, let alone spell Krzyzewski.
And this years final is one of those Cinderella stories, a true David and Goliath. Duke, the excellent basketball program that Coach K has turned into an institution vs. Butler, the little school with a total enrollment of 4700. They are reminesscent of the Gene Hackman movie Hossier’s. Indiana’s finest young men. And they even get to play at home. A mere 6 miles from their campus is the setting.
They took down mighty Syracuse. They eked past Izzo’s Michigan state machine. Their 33 year old head coach, Brad Stevens is in his 3rd year coaching Butler. Talk about a David.
And this year they face the Goliath Duke. Coack K has lead Duke to 3 national titles and 11 final four appearances in his 30 years as the head coach.
Should be a doozy. My brain (and my wallet if I were a betting man) would be on Duke to win going away, but my heart will be cheering Butler on from the tip off to the final buzzer.

Addendum: Congrats to the Duke Blue Devils on their 61-59 win in one of the most exciting final games I have watched. A last second buzzer beater by Gordon Hayward just missed giving Butler the win. What a fantastic game.
