The password to sign up is: screwed

If I can securely figure out who the winner is, I would be glad to give up an OfficiallyScrewed.com baseball hat and mug to the winner.

I am hoping as many of you sign up as possible before the deadline.

As an FYI, I have adjusted the point scoring as follows.

Each Round One Game Correct=1 point
Each Round Two Game Correct=2 points
Each Round Three Game Correct=3 points
Each Round Four Game Correct=4 points
Each Semi-Final Game Correct=5 points
Predict Correct Champion=10 points

Note you MUST predict every game all the way to, and including, the finals BEFORE Thursday Noon. You do NOT reset after each round. i.e. If your eventual overal winning choice loses in the first round, you will lose the potential points for every round you predicted them to win, including the finals. This is the way typical bracket pools are operated so don’t ask me why it is this way.

FIFA Human Rights Violation … My (Gr)ass

One organization says some must wear the hijab for religious reasons, while some may not.

One organization says they must not wear the hijab for safety reasons and it applies to EVERYONE.

Now whom do YOU think the human rights complaint will be filed against?

This is one of those cases when we just need to stop and slap ourselves.

“I think this is something that needs to be taken up with the United Nations in terms of human rights violations,” Anisa Ali of the United Muslim Women of Canada told CTV Newsnet on Saturday. “We, as Muslim women, have a right to participate in sporting activities just like non-Muslim women.”

Her group will be taking action “ASAP,” she said.

I think what any human rights group’s response to this type of complaint should be that Muslim women are not being prevented from playing soccer, but instead it should be viewed that ALL humans are being prevented from playing soccer with a headscarf.

Since EVERYONE is affected by the no headscarves rule, the only possible human rights violation would be the requirement that all Muslim women HAVE to wear a headscarf when Muslim men are exempt.

Aye, there’s the rub…

FIFA Board Agrees With Me – Soccer And Hijabs Don't Mix

Today in Manchester, England, FIFA soccer legislators ruled that a hijab is not allowed under rule 4 of the FIFA succer rules.

An 11 year old soccer player from Ottawa says she hoped her case would make a difference. But now, Asmahan Mansour says she is disappointed following today’s meeting of FIFA soccer legislators in Manchester, England.

A week after she was ordered off the field at a tournament in Montreal for wearing a hijab, Mansour was hoping the International Football Association Board would rule it’s O.K. to wear her headscarf.

However the board states, the issue of a head scarf is covered under rule four of its soccer laws.

The rule says players cannot wear anything that is potentially dangerous to themselves or another player.

This is exactly what I had stated in my blog post earlier today. Rule four does not specifically mention headscarves, but it does have safety guidelines which seem to be the basis for the ruling, and rightfully so.

I can empathize with the young lady who was disallowed from playing, but I played competitive soccer for well over a dozen years and as the father of a soccer player, I know that safety is always of the highest concerns. This decision may not be a popular one, but it is the right one.

Can Soccer And Hijab Mix?

Oh no, not another story about the young lady kicked off the soccer field for wearing a hijab!!!

Wait!! Don’t leave. This one is different.

In every story I have read in the press about Asmahan (Azzy) Mansour, the argument surrounds the religious argument, the safety, and FIFA. We hear about the referee being Muslim. We hear about the rules, and we hear about FIFA letting women wear Hijabs in soccer games in Pakistan and Iran.

But do we even know what the rules are there for and if they apply? The answer to this is no, because no one has ever addressed what a hijab is or how it is worn to see if it constitutes a safety risk.

From FIFA’s own website, the latest rules state:

Law 4 – The Players’ Equipment

SAFETY

* A player must not use equipment or wear anything that is dangerous to himself or another player (including any kind of jewellery)

BASIC EQUIPMENT

The basic compulsory equipment of a player comprises the following separate items:

* jersey or shirt;
* shorts – if thermal undershorts are worn; they are of the same colour as the shorts
* stockings;
* shinguards;
* footwear

NON-BASIC EQUIPMENT

*A player must not use equipment or wear anything that is dangerous to himself/herself or another player
*Modern protective equipment such as headgear, facemasks, knee and arm protectors made of soft, lightweight padded material are not considered dangerous and are therefore permitted

Now my quest was to determine “is wearing a hijab dangerous?” so to do so, I had to see what a hijab is and how it is worn so I did some googling and found a video series put on by The Canadian Muslim. The speaker is clear, articulate, and provides many types of demonstrations on how to wear various kinds of hijabs, oblongs, shaylas, etc.

The two things I noticed about wearing a hijab that had me most concerned are:

a) the pins and b) the wrapping of the hijab around the neck.

There are one or several pins used to keep the hijab in place. Since there is no rule on pins, the only two areas that might address this are the section on Jewellery (which states under no conditions is any jewellery to be worn) and the section on safety. In my mind, the pins alone would be enough to constitute the hijab as a risk to the wearer and, possibly, other players.

The video link below will show you how the hijab is typically worn. I watched both Part I and Part II and for the most part, the hijab is draped over the head with the ends coming under the chin and then being pulled back above the head over the ears (where they are pinned, or they can be draped over the shoulder. In addressing the positions, I came to the conclusion that each and every way the hijab was worn, there is a risk of a third party grabbing it in a way that would create a choking hazard.

In light of these two reasons, I would, personally, say that the hijab should not be worn on the soccer field AS IT IS TRADITIONALLY WORN. Note the emphasis. If there is a style of hijab or a way to wear it that does not use pins, or if there is a way for it to fall apart with absolutely no risk of choking, my view would change. But from what I have seen, I do believe they constitute a safety risk and should not be allowed on soccer fields.

I hope this article sparks someone to develop an “athletic hijab” the way others have developed athletic shoes, athletic bras, athletic socks, etc.

Red Tuesday At A Senator's Game

Tonight it was Red Tuesday. The Ottawa Senators and Washington Capitals squared off in a game in front of thousands of our military and the stands were full of people wearing red to show support for the troops and their families.

Sitting in some pretty fine seats, I managed to get the ceremonial puck drop on video. General Rick Hillier had the honours and to his right (left of video) is Karen Boire and Lisa Miller, the two Petawawa women who started Red Fridays. I had no idea this was planned when I bought the tickets, but considering I took the original Red Friday video, I felt honoured to be at this game.

I apologize to the two women on Rick Hillier’s left (right on video) as I did not catch who they were. If anyone knows, please drop me a note.

The two on Rick’s left are Karen MacEwan and Debbie Potter, whose husbands are serving in Afghanistan the military. (I hope I spelled those names correctly. I could not for the life of me hear the sound on the video until it was uploaded, thus the “moment of silence” remark. But it’s working now so enjoy)

Vote For Rory And Teach Wayne Gretzky What Democracy Is

The movement is afoot. The fans of Vancouver Canuck defencemen Rory Fitzpatrick have been promoting for him to start in the NHL All Star game and the young defender has over 400,000 votes and is kicking some butt in the balloting, behind only Scott Neidermeyer by about 20,000 votes.

He is a write in name, so this total is quite amazing.

But tonight I heard that Wayne Gretzky, the elitist that he is, is asking the league to intervene to keep Fitzpatrick from playing.

I am usually up for the top players showing up, but it really irks me that the Great One would try to undermine the support this player has received.

Wayne was a great hockey player. The best. But when it comes to democracy, he needs to take a valium. Heck, he can take two, they’re small.

I say Vote For Rory just to teach Wayne a lesson.

You can go to the nhl.com website, click All Star Ballot on the left hand side, then click Canada, and choose Rory Fitzpatrick from the Write In Western Conference List below the main selections.

Liberal Vixens

If you go to google’s online translator and plug in the word “Volpe” and have it translate from Italian to English, it spits out the word “Vixen”.

If you then go to Dictionary.com and plug in the word “Vixen” you get the definition:

1. a female fox.
2. an ill-tempered or quarrelsome woman.

Considering Joe is fighting on despite having signed up dead people and having taken donations from teenagers, we know he is quarrelsome. Considering he is a wiley politician who decided to play the ethnicity card by screaming “It’s because I am Italian” when he got caught signing up the dead people, I would consider him as sly as a fox.

In other news, on Mike Duffy Live tonight Belinda Stronach politicianed her way around the question on whether or not she and Tie Domi are/were having an affair that ruined his marriage. She made a point to comment that the allegations were exactly that, but then she said it would not be prudent for her to comment on a case that was before the courts. (meaning Tie Domi’s divorce battle with his wife).

All I can say is that if Stronach had not had an affair, she would most certainly have been denying it.

Belinda seems to be more of a vixen than Volpe!

T-Bone Brings Home A Bronze

Today was T-Bone’s summer soccer league year end tournament.

6 teams in the league and they played three mini games of 45 minutes and the top four records went on to the semi finals.

After a hard fought 2-0 loss in the 9 am game, T-Bone’s Orange Crush team had two games off to rest up. We headed back to his 12pm game and they evened up their plus/minus by winning 2-0. Their third game at 1pm was a yawner (0-0 tie).

Their 1-1-1 record garnered them a tie with two other teams for second place but they took the official spot on goal differential.

In the semi finals they got their butts handed to them by a team they had trouble with all year by a score of 4-1 which put them into the match for the bronze medal against the team that beat them in the morning match.

With a little motivation and some great defence, they managed to reverse their morning score and took the game 2-0.

Way to go T-Bone. It was a great season.

CBC Circles The Wagons, Competitors Smell Blood

We all know the MSM has been getting pounded for their primarily left leaning bias. Well things are getting quite interesting on two fronts.
One is when Stephen Taylor busted Christina Lawand of the CBC for juxtaposing a comment by the Prime Minister right after a Lebanese protesters statement that made him look quite cold and uncaring towards the Lebanese. The two clips took place in two different places and the PM’s statement was the tail end of a quote which asked him about much more than just the Lebanese Canadian feelings.

Well in the follow up post which Stephen takes a well deserved bow after Warren Kinsella comments on the bust, a commenter, Jay, posts his feedback from Jonathan Whitten, producer of CBC’s The National. You can read the comment and response here. Whitten doesn’t admit there was any wrong doing, but does admit they could have clarified the Prime Minister’s position a little better.

I do, however, agree with your concern about the structure of the report. The construction of the piece did make it appear the Prime Minister was responding directly to the woman protester, and that was not the case. We should have taken the time to make it clear that the Prime Minister was responding to a general question, and not a specific question about the woman’s concerns, and I regret that. While this does not constitute a misrepresentation of Mr. Harper’s position, or the position of his Government, the program could have, and should have, taken the time to be clear about what prompted the response.

The second front is the CTV hostile takeover attempt at the rights to Hockey Night in Canada. I have blogged about this before and the HNIC rights are one of the only profitable divisions of the CBC.

Right now, the CBC is paying about $65-million a year for broadcasting; TSN’s cable deal is worth about $15-million; and CTV-owned RDS’s Montreal Canadiens’ French-language agreement is for about $12-million.

That adds up to $92-million, meaning a CTV-TSN bid of $140-million would exceed the current amount by almost $50-million a year.

Could the CBC match that offer? Not likely. For starters, it doesn’t have a sports cable outlet. Therefore, it would bid only for English-language broadcast rights and perhaps French-language rights for Radio-Canada.

If the CTV offer gets accepted then you can pretty much kiss either the CBC goodbye, or a big whack of your tax dollars as the national entity appeals to the government for more financing to support itself.

Can we all start singing it now?

Ding dong the witch is dead…which old witch, the CBC Witch…
Ding dong the wicked witch is dead…..

I Had No Idea Her Bony Little Arms Had It In Them

Yesterday the public schools in Ottawa had their annual competition in various events like sprints, jumping, throwing, etc.  The events are broken out by grade and Cookie happened to qualify as one of the two sent from her school to compete in the Ball Throw.  All 60 lbs of her 4th grade self.

I have seen her hit baseballs with ease, win provincial cheerleading championships, compete for ovre 5 years at rhythmic gymnastics and continually she impresses me with how she simply excels at sports.

So what does she manage to do?  Throw the ball further than any fourth grader in the city of Ottawa.  I couldn’t believe it when she showed me her first place ribbon.  It was as red as the sunburn she got standing in the sun all day.

Nice job cookie.
