The facts:
-Chrysler to cut about 2000 jobs due to restructuring
-Ford to close engine plant cutting 860 jobs
-Toyota opening new “plant is expected to create 1,300 direct jobs and several thousand additional jobs at parts manufacturers and related industries.”
Not to mention January 2007 was one of the hottest job creation months in Canada with 89,000 new jobs created. The analysts had only forecasted 10,000 new jobs but the Canadian economy is red hot.

What the media fails to mention is that the Toyota plants and all the other Japanese plants in North America are non-unionised – including Saturn. Any wonder that the CAW is worried. How many millions in “dues” are they loosing. This is their true concern – not the loss of jobs or the freer trade. Would people in Japan buy a car that is built with $65/hr labour or $15 an hour? This is reflected in the cost of the car. Would anyone in Canada pay more for an import just because it’s an import? Of Course they wouldn’t. So why would a Chinese car buyer buy a North American car that costs more than a domestic car? What will happen when the $15,000 luxury cars start coming in from China in a year or two? Will it be the government’s fault that people are buying these imports instead of the $60,00 domestic ones?
