Obesity Doesn't Care If You Can Play Mozart

From this article:

An online petition to the Government of Canada, signed by more than 35,000 people, says the credit is unfair and places a higher value on fitness than on music or visual and dramatic arts.

The Canadian Conference of the Arts urged the government to include a variety of arts activities, including music, theatre and visual arts, in the tax credit.

I don’t think these art critics get the intent of the tax credit, but this raises quite an interesting conundrum.

The arts tend to be championed by the left. Tax cuts tend to be championed by the right.

Hmmmmm…..

There shouldn’t be credits for anything, including sports. My understanding is that the sports credit is a reaction to the growing levels of obesity as well as overall lack of fitness in our kids these days.

Nobody is concerned about the arts. They get loads of free money.

The tax credit was a stupid idea from the beginning.

I’m in favour of tax credits and I think lessons of any kind should qualify as an ‘educational’ deduction.

I’m an artist and a conservative. I think art should have to sink or swim in the marketplace like any other product.

The fattiness is due to bad diet – remember when french fries were an occasional treat and hamburgers were eaten at home?

It’s also due to sedentary behaviour – remember when you were always outside running around and didn’t even want to come in when the streetlights went on? In those days, the kids’ knees were all bigger than their legs, I don’t even remember any ‘fat’ kids in school.

Too much snacking – remember when you sometimes took something for recess such as an apple or banana? Vending machines in the schools – please. People are constantly eating these days.

If you want your kids to slim down, make them play outside, keep things like fruits, cheese and crackers, nuts, chocolate milk, etc, for snacks, don’t eat anything that comes in a box or bag more than once or twice a month and avoid modified starch like the plague. Buy juice, not soda pop. Both contain sugar but fruit juice contains vitamins and minerals.

Eat home-cooked meals with lots of vegetables, at least three including a starch, eat out occasionally at good quality restaurants – the cost is about the same but the food is better for you. Make your own desserts. Get the kids involved in cooking.

Heck, it’s not rocket science…and playing the guitar might burn as many calories as standing around a hockey arena waiting your turn to play.

Government should not be trying to influence us one way or another.Particularly with our own money. If there is money to spare, then cut taxes!
