Happy Greek (un) Independence Day

As many of you know, my background is Greek. I was born here in Canada to immigrants from Greece who worked hard, made an honest living and taught me great values that they brought with them from the homeland back in the mid 1960’s.

Well today, March 25th, is the day Greeks celebrate breaking free from the Ottoman empire. It is more affectionately known as Greek Independence day.

So I would like to congratulate Greece on being independent and for standing up on it’s own two feet and for working hard to become a proud, stable, secure……oh wait….I forgot about the €110 billion bailout from the EU and the failing economy and the huge public sector with the overtaxed private sector and the giant bloated retirement packages…

Nevermind. You’re not independent anymore.

They haven’t been for a long time. When I was in Greece in 1989, all the young people were sitting at the kafenio nursing a 50cent coffee for hours because they had no money to buy another, and yet they wanted to enjoy the good life of sitting around all day while their parents killed themselves working on the farms.. but no.. the kids were too good for working on a farm. Well, more than 20 years later, those kids have grown up and still think they are too good to work and that the world owes them a living. They used to make fun of Canada and the United States and brag that they invented democracy. My answer to that, then and now, is “That was 2000 years ago. What have you done lately?”

We all know what they have done. They’ve looted, burned, rioted and generally make me cringe when people ask me “What do you think of what’s going on in Greece right now?” What do I think? I’m embarrassed to be associated in any way with those lazy-ass, ignorant, self-entitled, uneducated fools who are too self-important to work at an honest job, and too blind to see the rest of the world laughing at them and thinks they are pathetic losers.

THANK GOD THANK GOD THANK GOD our family left.

Yeah I don’t think independence is having your citizens turned into ecb vassals for bank bailouts in other pigg nations. With the Goldman Sachs technocrat now in charge they are all but…. Wait for it……. Officially screwed.
