I still say spending on tax credits is not really spending. And because of this, I want to thank the Minister of Finance for his budget because it DID drop my tax burden.
The new $2,000 child tax credit will help my family with $310 more for Cookie and $310 more for T-Bone, my two children. The end of the marriage penalty will help my family with $209 more dollars for TBH, my wife.
Thank you Mr. Flaherty for giving me back $829 every year. This may not seem like much to some people out there, but it’s a month’s groceries to me. It’s the cost of the registration fees for my children’s sports. It’s the cost of two out of town trips when my kids compete in a sport that they excel at. It’s two or three monthly car payments. It’s 14 or 15 gas tank fill ups. It’s the cost of that new computer for my kids. If you’re Scott Reid or John Duffy, it’s 20 cases of beer or 1000 bags of microwave popcorn.
But more than anything, it is just plain appreciated.
Thank you.

You, Sir, are the first one that I have ‘heard’ say thank you!Class! And you remember the manners Mom taught you!Wonderful news for your family.
I was SAHM for 15 years….all we ever hoped for was a tax break like this!Glad you will benefit!
Someone let the dogs out last night…after all the Lib garbage, the reaction of some conservatives was disturbing!
How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time …I like Harper and Flaherty’s bites!

I’m glad that the budget helped releive the tax burden on a large demographic in Canada – the family with children, but I doubt that Mr. “Beer-and-Popcorn – Alberta-can-bl@w-me” Scott Reid (LPC spinmeister) or Mr. “Intimidate the Real Duffer” John Duffy will get much money back to satiate their appetite for corn and suds while they bloviate and philosophize on their couches.

There’s a few hidden dollars, too, in the form of improved transfers to the Provinces.
Sure, it could mean more spending by McGuinty – but without having to dig into our pockets to do so.
Or it could mean McGuinty gets to take credit for putting a few bucks back (instead of giving the credit to Flaherty).
Or it could mean Ontario gets to improve their funding formula for cities, and relieve the municipal tax burden.
(Worst case, the Province & the municipalities use it as an excuse to not trim their fat, and waste the money.)
Either way, this “extra” federal spending is something more for which I’m grateful.

I don’t know if you can get any more conservative than helping families with children.
It’s something we haven’t seen in this country for a long time.
As a father of 3 children under 9, these types of tax credits will be helpful.

Ditto, I’m still greatful for the $100.00 per child/month we’re receiving for our 2 year old. It’s more then we got for our other 2 kids (8&10) under the Liberals. Anything the government can can do for families will be well received.
I’m a little worried about the SUV tax and how it will hurt sales. This will in-directly effect manufacturing in Ontario and directly effect sales in all provinces, but hey if you want Y2Kyoto you’re going to have to pay for it. I still don’t think the average Canadian has any idea how much going un-questionably green is going to cost everybody. Once everything we purchase starts costing us more by 5-10% it might be too late to turn back!

Paul O,
A common fallacy surfaces again. Never forget there’s only one taxpayer (you and me), and “extra” money transfers to the provinces will undoubtedly be spent unwisely and inefficiently (don’t kid yourself). We will see absolutely nothing for this extra cash, and if you think McGuinty will help relieve the municipal tax burden, you haven’t followed his history very closely.

As a senior, I’m glad to see the potential roll back of converting RRSPs to RIFs from 69 to 71. If the budget passes, I’m just going to dodge the bullet on that one. I’m a widow, so can’t take advantage of income splitting. I’m retired but still work part-time and am getting by just fine so far and don’t really want/need the extra income at this time. If I want more income, I’ll just work more days. I figure based on family longevity, I’ve probably got another 25 years ahead of me!
With regards to family income-splitting, back in the baby bonus days, it used to really annoy me that the cheques were made out to me, but my spouse, having the somewhat higher income, had to pay the tax as he also had to claim the kids. Income splitting sure would have helped us then.

I’d like to thank the Conservative government for the LAST budget as well. I am a graduate student with HUGE annual tuition costs (and I’m low income as a student as well…). Not a good combination.
The last budget put my entire income (the student scholarship/bursary income that I get from UofT as a grad student) into a NON-TAXABLE BRACKET. This move increased my tax return this year by $2100!! Very welcome money that I used to help pay off some of my student loans.
So THANK-YOU!
The NDP are whining (as they usually do) that tuition fees should be lowered. I like this better. Indirectly, Stephen Harper has gotten money back into my pockets without having to force the Universities to adjust their books and lower fees (likely resulting in the firing of university employees in the process).

JCL: you’ll note that I acknowledged the possibility that McGuinty would waste the money. But he’s wasting a lot of money anyway: do you blame Flaherty for that? Don’t fall into the trap of blaming the Feds for Provincial waste!

I am quite apalled at most “so called” conservative blogs poo-pooing the budget. I am an early 30’s single male with full time employment and yes I get nothing. So? This is incentive to start a family. The MSM has shit all over this calling conservatives no better than the Fiberals with this spending. Take your head out of your ass for a moment and realize we have a minority government and this budget was necessary or we would have no tax credits!
So in order for me to benefit, are there any hot conservative girls in Ottawa who wanna make babies?
And yes this means marriage.
