Con"service"ative With A Smile

Friday morning the news hit the airwaves that the planned expansion of Limebank Rd. (scheduled for completion next year) would not happen on time after the NCC refused to go ahead with the planned sale of some land for the widening of the road.

With a couple of Conservative MPs on the job, the plan is back on schedule less than 24 hours after the hiccup appeared. THAT’S Service!!

Nepean-Carleton MP Pierre Poilievre confirmed at about 2:30 p.m. that the NCC will no longer be blocking the sale of land.

“They (the NCC) are now out of the way,” said Poilievre. “They will no longer be blocking the sale of land needed for the expansion of the Limebank Rd.”

Poilievre said he and federal transport minister Lawrence Cannon, who is also responsible for the NCC, had two emergency meetings today to reverse the decision by the NCC.

It’s all good! Now… are they still looking at that light rail system or is that notion DOA?

The original plan is DOA (thank goodness). Now they are looking at a few other options including one that would use old VIA rail lines to expand the existing O-Train, a commuter rail train that only runs a few stops, but many like me, wish they would expand.

i.e. use what you have. They just created the O train a few years ago and the last council wanted to put in new rails which was a big waste of what they have already built. (and tax dollars to boot)

Remember $200M of our LRT is federal taxes and $200M is provincial so everyone should be interested in Ottawa’s light rail.

It’s funny… I read a bit about the role that Baird had in calling BS on the original plan. They represented Baird as being unreasonable because he asked for some hard figure analysis instead of rubber-stamping the project.

Use what you have doesn’t always work if you’re dealing with people who are “connected” to city hall. Here in Vancouver, they’ve turned things upside to install a LRT line from the airport to downtown along Cambie Street (a major street) while making no accommodation for the diverted traffic.

That is frustrating enough but there is an existing rail right-of-way, complete with tracks, deeded in the name of the City of Vancouver… but they refused to reactivate it because it passes through some of the most expensive real estate in the region. Instead, they’re talking about tearing up the tracks and making it into walking trails. Nice to have friends in city hall, isn’t it?

Transportation infrastructure in the greater Vancouver region is the most illogical, idiotic, ill-planned clusterfark I’ve ever seen. That’s what you get when socialists hold power.
