Isnt it a tad ironic? CTV will blame it on some conservative internet types… (have they even MENTIONED the bloggingtories at all?)

Things come in threes … so hang tight.

You are the undisputed reigning champion of quoting completely bogus polls. Note for the future: an online poll is not a valid poll at all, no matter how encouraging the results. The reason: it only tests those who decide to a) pass by the site, and b) vote. Both of these criteria destroy any semblance of a representative sample, unless we’re talking about a sampling of CTV website visitors.

Well, who in Canada is more likely to go to CTV? HUMMM I would venture a guess, that it’s lefties, so this poll is actually very encouraging, because even some of those lefties must to voting for the Conservatives.

If 59% of those polled think that Kyoto is NOT the only answer to global warming, then IMO, these numbers don’t look far off.

It must be very difficult for the Libs to watch PMSH run with the enviro message. Did they think Steve would just roll over and let the Libs own it?

anon, I am also the undisputed champion of the basketball version of 21 in my household, the undisputed champ of eating edamame in bulk and the undisputed champ of whistling the theme from Mash for consecutive hours (14). Don’t understate my skillz by only pointing out that I like to read and vote in online polls.

I must say – The effort within the BT to make sure every reader gets out and votes has probably skewed the numbers somewhat… I think we all hope for something like that.

The fact remains – as little as a poll like this really matters, it has the same effect on the “mob mentality” as any other equally as innacurate polling method. Think of how often polls are used to make an argument. A poll is not accurate – just by the nature of the beast itself. But the effect is huge.

If even 1000 uneducated people who would naturally be liberals out of convenience or habbit(a huge portion of people) see this – a handful just might start thinking twice about who they chose.

I don’t think anyone who follows politics takes any poll very seriously(or with a grain of salt at the very least). But none of us can deny the propoganda effect of them.

and so we all agree that the poll dancing on CTV national news last evening claiming that the Libs were ahead in polls 37% with CPC at 31% was:
    1. untrue
    2.biased
    3.insignificant
    4. a good exercise programme for Lloyd and Bob…

I just wondered how 2 “approval-type”polls could come up with such different results within 24 hr…???
assuming Libs, Dippers and Conservatives had equal oppotunity to ‘skew’ the ‘online’ poll, who do ya trust?
    CTV…??? not!

I can’t believe you people are trying to spin this poll!

I’ve never seen anything like it as far as polls go. It’s an insult to every polling company out there (including the ones who work for the Tories).

online polls are not representative. None are. First, you are polling only those who read at the site. Then it omits people who dont have a computer (there are some). Also, it is pretty easy to circumvent the system and vote more than once.

That said, “professional polls” also have their weaknesses. Question order, response bias, question wording, responder effects (lying, saying things they think the pollster wants to hear) all can affect the results of a survey. They are fairly good at getting a representative sample and weighing the responders in terms of education/eco status, age, gender. But polls are expensive- even telephone ones. A sample of 1000 can yield a MOE of around 3% (19/20), but most news agencies forget to mention that when they look at regional data (cons are losing support in quebec, for example), they are usually only basing this on an n of around 200-makes interpretation meaningless as the MOE goes up drastically.

I’ll remember all this when I see a poll at the Liblogs or the blogging dippers pages.

Thanks for all the good fodder.

I’ll assume you all told Decima how the partisan poll I blogged about here sucked right? If not, you can all shut your pieholes.

#10 so if online polls are not representative, are you saying other polls are more representative? The so-called poll that was quoted on CTV national news on Tues night said Libs 37%, CPC 31%….how do we know that is representative? I don’t trust many of the polls…I object to Lloyd and Bob chatting about their poll as if it was ‘very dependable’. That is my point in #7.

    Online polls, don’t even bother.
Online polling to check the mood of the country is like touching your toaster to see if you have a fever. It all signifies nothing!

Jack gets confused between SARS and BSE, so you’ll never know what is going on in that party and why should people trust Dion? He signed Kyoto, named his dog after it, then watched as his party increased the gases he was supposed to eliminate and now prances around in green scarves…makes me want him in power!

If anything, it should be greater for the Conservatives because they’ve done more for the environment in a year than the liberals have in 13 years!
