Mark your calendars. On Friday July 24th, John Stossel has a segment on ABC’s 20/20 which looks at the Canadian Universal Health Care system. This is very timely as the Obama administration is poised to pass a Universal Health Care bill through Congress.
In an effort to educate American’s about our system, Stossel does some serious digging. In a brief preview some of the information that will be revealed is:
a) Canadian doctors earn less than 50% of what their American counterparts make, which leads to the doctor shortage.
b) towns in Canada are holding lotteries when space opens up with local family doctors to determine which family will get a doctor.
c) CT Scans, MRIs and other critical tests can get done usually next day…if you are a cat or a dog. But for a human the wait time is far longer.
If Stossel ‘s past segments are an indication of what we can expect then this segment should be eye opening for Canadians as well as Americans. I urge you all to take note and set your PVR’s. For a sneak peak, check out the early promo by clicking here.
We will also do our part and try to get the show recorded and posted to the web as we feel it is critical for Canadians to know how OfficiallyScrewed we really are.

I am skeptical that ABC’s ‘reporting’ will be less than unbiased on socialized health care since they recently re-confirmed their allegiance to the ObamaNewsCorps:
“ABC News Teams Up With Obama White House to Present President’s Health Care Plan”
“ABC News will host an hour-long special on health care reform in the U.S. next Wednesday from the White House East Room — a move that ABC is defending but critics are calling a surrender to the Obama administration’s effort to control the debate.”
Canadians well know about long wait times and health care rationing imposed by provincial government health-care budget caps.
At least Canadians can spare our pets the long wait-times we may experience since ‘pet-care’ is not government regulated and rationed.

aek (#1) maybe so, but maybe this piece is meant to counter the argument that it is not complete “surrender to the Obama administration’s effort to control the debate.” You can’t underestimate John Stossel. He may not come out and directly attack the Obama plan. However, simply presenting the true facts will make people all the wiser. I encourage all to read Stossel, especially Libertarians. His books Myths, Lies, And Downright Stupidity and Give Me A Break – How I Exposed Hucksters, Cheats, And Scam Artists And Became The Scourge Of The Liberal Media are both great reads. The title of his second book says it all.
And remember, Imus, Sean Hannity, Rush Limbaugh and Mark Levin are all broadcast on ABC Radio so the ABC family hasn’t completely fallen over. Their TV News might be suspect, but they know where their bread is buttered on the airwaves.

The Americans seem to talk more about our health care system then we do. If it wasn’t for them, I’d get the impression from our politicians that everything was great.
Why can’t we have an open debate about our health care system in Canada?

If it’s a typical Stossel piece, he’ll grossly exaggerate some isolated negatives, then try to make it sound as if that’s the norm. He will lie and say that everyone waits in line all the time, that nobody has a personal physician, that nobody can get diagnostics in time to save their lives, etc, etc.
We’ve got things in our system that need to be improved, and there are models in Europe that we should look towards, but we are significantly better off than Americans are. Adopting our system as is would still be a huge improvement over what they have now.

After watching the preview you linked, I plan to watch OBC’s 20/20 on Friday July 24th. Thanks for the tip!
I hope that Canadian politicians will watch it as well.
Stossel must feel lonely at times at the OBC.

Brrr (#4) to quote you “he’ll grossly exaggerate some isolated negatives” and “We’ve got things in our system that need to be improved.”
Perhaps b) is a one of those isolated situations, but a) and c) are issues from coast to coast. Doctors salaries in Canada are pitiful and the system just can’t compensate for it. Too many tests are being done because insurance covers them and malpractice suits are too high a risk so doctors just check off all the tests even though they are not all required. And c) is simply a travesty. Fido and Puss’n’boots can get more timely MRI or CT Scans than you or I. And it isn’t as if it is a small difference. We are talking about months.
Wake up.
