Liberals Take Meaning Of Opposition To A New Level And Oppose Their Own Bill

In what amounts to the Liberals coming out and stating “I spit in your general direction!“, they have come out and opposed the Tory plan to extend the Anti Terrorist bill that the Liberals themselves created and passed while in power.

The former Liberal government of Jean Chretien rushed the sweeping federal law through Parliament in the weeks after 9/11, arguing law-enforcement agencies needed extensive new tools to deal with the threat of terror.

But in response to concerns the law would trample civil liberties, the government placed a “sunset” clause on the provisions of the law enabling “preventive arrests” and “investigative hearings.” Both provisions expire at the end of next week, unless both Houses of Parliament pass a resolution to extend them.

The Conservative government tabled a motion yesterday that would extend the provisions for three years.

But now that the Liberals have withdrawn support, the motion looks doomed. Both the NDP and the Bloc Quebecois oppose any extension. A vote on the motion is expected next week.

The Liberal shift surprised national security experts, who were expecting an extension to sail through Parliament.

Has Dion lead the Liberals further left than they have been in a long time? Or is he opposing just to be opposing? I think it is a bit of both.

What’s your take?

H/T to Werner Patels

I agree with you, it must be a bit of both, but primarily it’s his shift to the left, I believe. I recently found out (through a Blogging Tory and then a related magazine article) that Dion was heavily into Marxism as a student and scholar. I think he may have gotten to close to that particular ideology, because he’s showing all the signs of wanting to take Canada down the Marxist road.

Only the Liberals could be so dumb….there’s a side story in Saturday’s National Post about how Alberta’s oil sands are listed as the next target by none other than Al Quaeda because we supply oil and gas to the U.S.

The Liberals are going to get this country in some serious trouble.

Werner (#1) I did read about Dion having gotten close to Marxism. Ironically, the Democrats are quite close with the communists and most Democrats in the USA don’t even know about Venona and how Alger Hiss, the Rosenbergs, etc were all communist sympathizers.

anonymous (#2) You just gave me a shiver. If the Liberals can’t shut down big oil with Kyoto, then letting the terrorists do it for them by not supporting this bill may be the backup plan for the Marxist Dion
    Hmmmmmm…….

I can stomach a lot of things, even heavy spending on some types of (socialist) government programs, but I draw the line when this country’s safety is put at risk due to lax immigration rules or anti-terror action. That’s when I see red, because Canada must be kept safe from all those bastards in the world that are out to harm us in the West at all cost.

What worries me is the Muslim MP from the Anti-West/Israel Riding , he is a big supporter of Palestine House and CAIR/CAIR-Canada which is a Saudi funded Org. that tried to impose Sharia-law in Canada
as a protected Charter Right for religious freedoms.
The MP also supported Maher Arar and the massive Law-Suit of $400 milliom dollars against us taxpayers for what Syria did to Arar , and on Wed Feb 14th CAIR is hosting a “Victory” dinner for the Arar’s new $$$$$millions by holding it in Room 200 of or Parliament Block in Ottawa.
CAIR has posted the event and now warns the Terrorists
that there will be a security check to enter the event
and people should arrive about 30min ahead to clear the check at the door, CAIR has several members in Federal Prisons in the US for their ties to Hamas/Hezbollah and raising funds for terrorism in general.
So why the hell are Federal MP’s listed as attending the event if CAIR makes Arar looking guilty of being linked to know Terrorism groups like Hamas which his Palestinian wife has never Publically denounced , and even Jack Layton won’t denounce Hezbollah and Hamas because the NDP is too anti-Bush to recognize that Human Rights and Justice shouldn’t be tainted by Pride which Layton is using to look as if he’s standing up to the Great Satan the USA.

Al-Qaeda teaches their followers that the first thing to do when caught is to Alleged torture and try to inflict harm on yourself to create visible injuries to back the lie, then you get outside Muslims to protest the arrest and crusade for Justice to have you released , I can’t help but see the same pattern for Arar and now we see the Ottawa Muslim Prof. try to undermind our Military by making allegations that we are abusing the murderers in Afghanistan.
The “Preventive” arrests will be removed and this is a “Victory” for the Saudis and Al-Qaeda terrorists because Canada will have to wait for the Suicide bombers to slaughter thousands of us before the RCMP can act and arrest them.

But it’s not all bad news, Muslims will have sealed their fate because it’s a double-edged sword they created by removing this clause.
Keep in mind that if anyone else comes to Canada and plots to bomb Mosques and slaughter thousands of Muslims it will be the same RCMP that won’t be able to make Preventive arrests , plus , why would a non-Muslims report any potential bombings from rumours
if the RCMP can’t act anyway and the Muslims themselves created this atmosphere in canada that
all people are innocent to proven guilty.

Don’t be surprised if most of those attacks on Mosques that have been blamed on White Christians end up being infighting by the Sunni and Shia groups in canada that want revenge for the attacks in Iraq , and watch how fast CAIR and the CIC demand “Profiling” at the borders to stop the Jihadists from killing any Muslims in Canada.

The strategy attempts of late by the 3 left leaning parties is to get the Conservatives to commit to unrealistic goals relating to climate change that will certianly fail in hopes that when they do fail, they can slither out of their slimy manholes into phone booth , put on their capes , and save the day.

They are pulling off the same strategy here , but this one will backfire because there are Cells that will emmerge in Canada , and already have emmerged in Canada where this legislation may prove effective. The argumenmt from the left is that , to date , it has never needed to be employed . That may be good for now , but it may not be so good later.

Liberals introduced the motion in their 3rd Majority winning stint of parliament under Mr. Chretian. There has never been any reported abuse to date , because it legislation has never been enacted upon. We can conclude here that the abuse equasion is a total fabrication.

We see a merging trend here that the Conservatives may be able to capitalize on. If the other parties are prepared to weaken National Security , and continually try to box in Mr. Harpers Conservatives to cave in to unrealistic goals , and risking our national security. The Conservatives should attempt a bill of confidents explaining to Canadians of the nessessity of these provisions in our ant terrorist laws.

If anything , we should be looking at ways to increase our security when it comes to potential known Cell threats , not diminishing them. I feel a strong argument could be made , and the wavering leadership of the other parties could prove a strong point of distinction between the left , and Mr.Harper’s Conservatives. This would also bring out some of the rivalling factions in the Liberal camp if a confidents measure where in place.

Canadians would clearly see that one party alone stands clearly strong on national security and will put their political lives on the line to defend it. That is a patriotic issue that will garner support if addressed effectively. This may force the Liberals to back their own bill , and see the foolishness of the risk’s entailed.

Bottem line , Harper wins. He wins if the Liberals back off , and he wins if we go to the polls.

    Timothy Coderre

Does anyone have a link to that? I searched my whole Saturday Post & couldn’t find it. Thanks.

Joanne (#7) I didn’t see a paper copy of the Post but on the web there are two articles from Feb. 10th with the word Qaeda when you run a search. One is that Anti-Terrorist extension story and the other is Chronicling the Digital Jihad which is more oriented around terrorists using modern technology.

Now the first article which I quoted above has the last paragraph include a quote by a Liberal who feels we should extend the law because we are on the Al Qaeda hit list but it does not specify the oil fields.

Hopefully anon comes back to let us know.

Dion looks increasingly to have outflanked the NDP. Today’s QP, for example, was opened with Dion suggesting that the moves by the Conservatives to include Law Enforcement representatives on the committee making recommendations on judicial apointments was “extreme right-wing ideology”.

Seems anyone who doesn’t share Dion’s worldview is nothing but an ideologue.

Well, Dion should have paid more attention to Bob Rae, who said that all parties must move beyond ideology. But everyone who runs out of ideas (as Dion has) will resort to ideology to attack his opponents.

    Dion won’t last very long.

As I understand it these powers have never been used and so therefore never abused!
Why would you not continue your support of this additional security measure? Cheap Politics thats all!

Sorry guys, I had the wrong date because my “days” were mixed up. It wasn’t in the Saturday issue of the National Post. It was in the Friday issue, hard copy, page A5….on the side column where it states “World News.”

Perhaps go to the local library to find a copy of Friday’s National Post???
