Randomness Be Damned, Tim Horton's Gives Me The "Seam"

The Tim Hortons SeamI have been drinking Tim Horton’s coffee for as long as I can remember and drinking it from literally dozens, if not hundreds, of different franchise locations. And I want some answers.

Why, oh why, is the seam in the coffee cup ALWAYS lining up with the space in the lid created when you pull back the tab.

I know most of you are saying “What the heck is he talking about?” but I want you to pay attention. This cannot possibly be random. The diameter of a Tim’s Extra Large lid is 9cm, meaning the circumference is approximately 28.25 cm. The space created by the pull back tab is approximately 2.5 cm, which means the “seam” that runs up the cup should only appear in sip gap approximately once every 12 cups. Yet I seem to get the “seam” at least 80 to 90% of the time.

This is far too great to be random. It must be in the procedures or equipment Tim Horton franchises use to fill, stack and dispense the lids. In fact, I would go so far as to say the randomness probably comes in the “wrist twist” that some employees may add when pressing the lids down on the cup. If it wasn’t for that “wrist twist” I would think that 100% of the cups would give me the dreaded “seam”. And trust me, I am starting to hate it.

You get that uncomfortable bump in the lip of the cup and if you try to twist or remove and replace the cap, you inevitably get a leak in your cup due to the improper fit.

If you have noticed this or if you go out to Tim’s I urge you to pay attention to how often you get the “seam” and come back and comment.

I know this post wasn’t very political, but as Peter Truman of Global used to say “…but that too is reality.”

My god man you are dead on, My father and I were discussing the same thing as we go to Tim Hortans every saturday morning…..and always the seam is their staring at you as if to mock you….I say we form a lobby and put an end to this once and for all! but seriously it drives me nuts.

LMAO…my wife and I had this conversation last summer. I actually sent an e-mail to Tim Horton’s suggesting that part of their training program include “seam-avoidance” when preparing to-go cups for customers.

I actually prefer the seam lining up with the pull-back tab. I think many Tim’s employees are told to do it this way to prevent leaking, especially when the coffee cup is very full. That seam pushes up somewhat on the lid, thus creating a tiny gap through which coffee can leak when you rock the coffee cup a little bit. But if that place where the coffee can leak – where the seam meets the lid – is lined up with the tab, then, well, that’s where the coffee is supposed to come out anyway — it’s where you drink it.

I’ve had it several times where, just after I bought a Timmy’s coffee, it will leak somewhat into the coffee cup holder in my car precisely because the seam was not lined up with the tab. When I buy a Tim’s coffee, I actually line up the seam with the tab if it isn’t already.

I suppose one could just stick with drinking Tim’s coffee from a mug, but Tim Horton’s conspiracy theorists everywhere are convinced that the paper cup plays some role in the addictive nature of Tim’s coffee. But that’s a whole other discussion worthy of it’s own blog post.

Whatever the real reason, I think it’s a bonus; it helps to ‘position’ the hole in the lid when driving at night so as to avoid wearing some of your double double.

From the oxymoron department, I read the first two or three comments on this post, jumped up and ran out into the family room yelling “I’m not crazy, I’m not crazy!!”. When my wife heard what i was yelling about she turns to me and says “You’re crazy alright!”

    LMAO

Thanks for letting me know it wasn’t just me being paranoid about the seam. I honestly was starting to lose my mind.

905 Tory got it bang-on. Just try to drink the sucker when you’re wearing a clean white shirt, on your way to the office, on bumpy winter roads. I get po’d when I have to turn that lid around myself so that it opens on the seam, but if beats having a steady stream of hot coffee dripping all over you while you’re trying to concentrate on driving.

    Holy shit!

I thought I was the only one who hated when Tim’s does that!

This is great! I find like minded people with conservative views like mine (I’m not alone after all!!!) and now this!

    Oh happy day!

There must surely be an item for this in the Timmie training manual (for whatever reason) as the odds of the seam being under the tab are greater than that of you winning a coffee in the Roll Up the Rim contest.

I HATE THIS MORE THAN ANYTHING!!! I spilt hot coffee on my balls while driving on the highway today while I was trying to twist the lid to get the opening away from the seam.

Exactly my beef with Timmy’s. You get a leak every time they do this which is far too often. It should be included in the Dont’s during training. A seamless procedure.
