Media Bias Blatant In Coverage Of Polls

A few days ago, a poll came out announcing that the federal Liberals and federal Conservatives were neck and neck in the eyes of Canadian voters.  The press coverage of this poll was in every newspaper and on every news station I turned on.

Two days ago, Environics released a poll that indicates the Tories are 9 points ahead of the Liberals yet no one covered it.

This morning I heard about this poll on Lowell Green’s show and was simply shocked that no one covered this poll in the press.  Apparently this poll was over a three week period and the poll indicating a tie was over a two day period at the tail end of the Environics poll. I agree that two polls can have different results depending on the period of time and length of polling time, but for two polls so close together to have such different results is rare (albeit possible).

My main beef is that the press chose to cover the one that that puts the Liberals in a better light and ignore the one that has the Tories a full 3 percentage points better off than on election day last January!!

You always have to consider the confidence interval as well. The one trumpeted by CTV had a reliability factor of +/- 3.2%, if memory serves. This means there could have been a six-point spread but of course they never discuss that aspect of these polls.

These polls are pretty meaningless anyway. If an election is called, we’ll have a poll.

Good work uncovering the other one.

I heard Lowell talking about this poll this morning too, thanks for linking it. Funny how media reporting works, eh?

shhhhh…Canadians need to hear Liberals stating boldly that they are ready to resume their rightful place, with their hands on taxpayers purse, while they furiously cut each other into a thousand pieces in their race to elect scary Harper’s replacement.
    MSM has created a monster.

This totally off topic, but I notice when I come to your site, something called ‘spylite.php’, can’t pick up the rest, loads just before I get your blog. I just noticed it also appears in the loading line at the bottom of the screen, don’t know what you call it, when I come into the comments section.

I don’t know if this matters or not….

I just fired you off an email Steve that’s somewhat urgent, relating to those brass rings we were talking about a few nights back. If you can help me out with any resources I’d muchly appreciate it

Caveat (#4) to the right side of my site there is a link to the blogging tories blogroll. Above it is the BT Spy which indicates which blogging tory site has just been visited. A feature the guys at BT added a couple of months ago. If you mouseover the pause/play buttons it should give you the spylite.php file. i.e. it is not really my site that runs this program but it is a program residing at the blogging tories site that is embedded in my site via my adding the bt spy player.

I hope that explains it. I am pretty sure it is harmless.
