So in an honest effort to take part, I have been filling my countertop green bin with coffee grounds/filters, turkey bones, pork chop bones, lettuce ends, onion peels, egg shells and dirty paper towels for the past two weeks.
Last Sunday night I went to lift the paper bag (lined with a plastic) that came with the bin out of it and the bottom of the bag fell out effectively making the bag more waste.
So I went to the grocery store and spent 6 bucks on 20 plasticky type compostable bags.
I wonder if this bag will also start to compost before I get a chance to toss it out.
PREDICTION: The green bin program will fall flat on it’s face within 3 months leaving us nowhere to put our eggshells except on the face of Ottawa’s left wing city councilors.

You’re lucky. We’re not allowed to use any kind of plastic. Just paper bags. Yeah that’s fun.

I am so sorry to hear about your bin problems – this is getting crazy. Too bad garburators are not allowed in Ontario. Best thing about moving back west.
What is a more serious problem is the heavy plastic packaging (probably from China?) that one can hardly cut open.

Garbage recycling has become and always was a huge scam.
There was a time when all garbage went into 1 bin and then was dumped into 1 truck that had a driver and a labourer.
Recycling was supposed to LOWER the costs of disposal, instead it has caused costs to explode.
Now…
Most municipal disposal services, have doubled their fleet of trucks, 1 for garbage 1 for recyclables.
We the people do all the sorting work yet our costs have gone up.
Municipalities accross America have purchased millions if not billions of plastic recycling bins.
40% of all recyclables end up in land fills.
One person per truck, but they all have to be drivers now, (higher wages).
All these points have driven the cost of garbage disposal through the roof.
The beneficiaries have been…
The public sector UNIONS,
garbage truck manufacturers,
big oil(plastic comes from oil),
plastic injection companies,
and your local government, all municipal disposal service departments have used recycling to grow and hire more friends and family to life time jobs with rosy pensions.
Here is my solution….for Ontario.
If you like it, start demanding it of our politicians.
Build 8 to 12 medium sized energy from waste incinerators.
Throw ALL garbage including recyclables into 1 type of garbage truck.
Get all garbage trucks OFF our highways by using rail to transport our garbage to the incinerators.
All sorting/recycling will be done at the incinerator, by CONVICTS looking to learn a trade or score points for early release.
Dig up All old landfill sites, recycle whatever can be recycled and create energy with the rest.
There solved the energy problem, the garbage problem and the rehabilitation of convicts problem, all with one stone.
Ps.. sorry for being a windbag.

Not bad at all. I also like the idea of people on welfare, pensions and high school kids earning community credits working in these places too. In northern Europe they have good luck with incinerators so the technology is proven. I’m not sure about going back to the old collection method though as it would make sorting a nightmare. Some presorting like we have makes a big difference. If we used incinerators it could lower energy costs, so public is indirectly paid for their efforts.

Hey!
That is NOT PERMITTED!
NO other bags – recyclable or not – than ‘Bag to Earth’ ones are permitted in the Green bin!
(‘Bag to Earth’ is an Ottawa company, in case you did not know….)
And – shame, shame, shame, shame on you for even flirting with the idea of participating in this abomination dressed up as ‘green’ and ‘Earth Friendly’!
Stop it – and stop it now!!!
Please…..

I want to get rid of my green bin. I had enough this morning. Spent 1 hour hosing off my garage to get rid of maggots. Will trhe City take it back?
I do not want to do this, but it will be gone by the end of the day. Wether it’s in a gargage container or not. I don’t want to do this, but I’m done with the Green Bin program.
And please, I don’t need “suggestions” and “tips”. I need to know what to do with this bin. I will not store it as a decoration piece in my garage. We pay lots of money per square feet and I will not waste any of it.
